Poetry Spotlight: You’re Calling, by Bethan Laurels
Loved by locals, worshipped by holidaymakers and long used as a muse for artists and writers, the beautiful coast of Cornwall never fails to enchant. The third in our Poetry Spotlight series with Bethan Laurels, this is 'You're Calling inspired by dolphin calls off the Cornish coast.
You're Calling
You're calling, calling
I can hear you calling
Your voices rise above the waves
They carry with the wind
You're calling, calling
I can hear you calling
No sound stops you breaking through
To reach the one you lost
You're calling, calling
I can hear you calling
To the release of their passing breath
After the last swell broke
You're calling, calling
I can hear you calling
Call, call
I can hear you call
As their soul lifts with the breeze
And shelters from the seas
Call, call
To the one you love
To the beauty of their eyes
In the star showered skies
Bethan says:
On a summers day at Gwithian, with a walk along the dunes and to Godrevy, I saw a dolphin that had passed away and lay upon the stones. This was heartbreaking and a feeling that became so much stronger when I looked out to sea and could see her family. As I lay in bed that night under a clear sky I could hear them call.
