June 25th is World Sand Dune Day – designed to highlight the importance of sand dunes!

World Sand Dune Day is celebrated annually by coastal communities and projects across the world, established by Dynamic Dunescapes and Sands of LIFE, two projects working to restore coastal sand dune systems. Each year, #WorldSandDuneDay takes place on the last Saturday of June. In 2022, this was Saturday June 25th.

Following the success of the first ever World Sand Dune Day in 2021, this year coastal nature reserve managers, community groups and conservation organisations in the UK, Europe and beyond, hosted a wide range of exciting events! From dune yoga or nature-inspired art sessions to photography workshops and guided walks, there was something for everyone. Find out more about World Sand Dune Day, see the kind of events that we've previously run to celebrate our dunes, and explore our event photo gallery.

Meet our Partners for World Sand Dune Day

Here at Dynamic Dunescapes, we're delighted to be celebrating sand dunes with friends and colleagues across the UK and beyond. Click the links below to find out more about some of the projects and organisations, who are getting involved in World Sand Dune Day.

    Meet the founders

This new international awareness day has been established by Dynamic Dunescapes and Sands of LIFE.

Dynamic Dunescapes: Dynamic Dunescapes (DuneLIFE: LIFE17 NAT/UK/000570) is an ambitious £10 million partnership project restoring sand dunes across England and Wales for the benefit of wildlife, people and communities, led by Natural England and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the EU LIFE Programme. Project partners are Natural England, Plantlife, National Trust, Natural Resources Wales, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Sands of LIFE: Sands of LIFE (LIFE17 NAT/UK/000023) is a major conservation project to revitalise sand dunes across Wales. It will recreate natural movement in the dunes and rejuvenate habitats which are home to some of our rarest wildlife. The £4 million project, led by Natural Resources Wales (NRW), will restore over 2400 hectares of sand dunes, across four Special Areas of Conservation, on 10 separate Welsh sites. The project has received 75% funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union, with the Welsh Government providing 25% match funding.
