Join our Cumbria team for a day exploring and recording our dune wildlife at Sandscale Haws in celebration of World Sand Dune Day!

To celebrate World Sand Dune Day we’ll be holding a Dune Bioblitz!

Bioblitzes are a great way for us to find and identify as many different plants, animal and fungi species as possible. The information gathered which will then be used to help us better understand the wildlife living in the area, and the best ways to protect them.

Bioblitz schedule:

All day (10am - 4pm) Collect ID and spotter sheets from our Dune Den including wildflowers, birds, bugs and beasts! Explore the dunes and record the species you find.

10am - 11am Discover the wildlife found in rivers and ponds

12pm - 1pm Channel your inner botanist on our wildflower walk

1pm - 2pm Explore the strandline and shore to discover marine wildlife and curiosities.

3pm – 4pm Butterfly detectives on the dunes

9.30pm - 10.30/11pm Nocturnal detectives

Drop in for as long as you like to help our team - every keen set of eyes scouring these habitats is a real help!

The iNaturalist app is a great way to help record the different species found, it can be freely downloaded before the event or on the day in Google Play and Apple store. However, don’t worry if you don’t have a smart phone, we’ll be keeping a paper copy list of the species found too.

Don't forget to bring comfortable and adequate clothes according to the weather forecast. Boots are recommended and a water bottle to keep you hydrated. If you are joining the nocturnal detectives session, please bring a headtorch, warm clothes and ensure any children are monitored at all times.
